Belarus is situated in the west part of the Former Soviet Union Area, on the eastern edge of Europe between Poland in the West, Lithuania in the North-West, Latvia in the North and the Russian Federation in the East. In the South Belarus borders on the Ukraine. In the English usage they often call Belarus White Russia (B(y)elorussia). Area: 207.600 km. Administrative structure: 6 provinces (oblasty) (Brest, Grodno, Gomel, Mogilev, Vitebsk and Minsk). Minsk is capital of Belarus and serves as administrative centre of oblast at the same time.


Population: approx. 10 millions. Cities: Minsk (Capital) ca 1,7 millions, Gomel ca 495.000, Mogilev ca 360.600, Vitebsk ca 341.500, Grodno ca 307.100, Brest ca 300.000.


There are 2 official languages: Belarusian and Russian. Besides one speaks Ukrainian, Polish and other languages of ethnic minorities.


For a visit in spring and autumn you should take along transitional clothes. For summer it is advisable to have summer things with you. In winter you need warm clothes and winter shoes.

Visa necessary. On arrival at Belarus you should take out a travel health insurance for the period of your stay.
